Snoezelen: Controlled Multi Sensory Stimulation

Controlled sensory treatment a form of intervention addresses the sensory environment in which an individual functions. After over ten years of research and follow up evaluation, we have found that when children with developmental disabilities are placed in an harmonious sensory environment, mediated by an enabling therapist, this has beneficial effects on their general functioning.

Principles: "Many of our children do not respond to traditional treatment and educational methods. Some children are passive and do not initiate activities or make choices. They show little curiosity or desire to explore their environment, they are unable to focus their attention and quickly grow restless with an activity." Michele Shapiro

People Served: Controlled sensory treatment has had a positive therapeutic impact on children with a range of disabilities including developmental delays, severe disorders such as mental retardation, psychomotor dysfunctions, sight and hearing impairment, epilepsy, behavioral disturbances, special syndromes and other conditions including autism and cerebral palsy.

Professionals: The center is directed by an occupational therapist. Therapists from diverse disciplines receive special training in Controlled Sensory Stimulation before working in the Snoezelen.
