All over the world, in
November and December, people celebrate winter festivals of light. Jewish
people celebrate Hanukkah which also is called the Festival of Lights. On
Hanukkah people light candles. They do this to remember the miracle of the
oil that burned for 8 days. The
African festival of Kwanzaa starts on December 26th and lasts
until January 1st . This festival celebrates the middle of winter.
On each of the festival’s seven days people light colored candles in holders
called Kinaras. In India people
celebrate a festival of lights called Diwali, which lasts for four days. To learn more about

celebrate Christmas. This festival is a celebration of the day Jesus was born
in Bethlehem. People decorate evergreen trees with shiny decorations and
electric lights. Years ago they used candles too. To learn
